End of War
World War I was finally brought to an end on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles which was a treaty between the Allied powers and Germany. Other treaties involving the end of World War I were:
- Treaty of Saint-Germain (signed by the Allies and the Republic of German-Austria)
- Treaty of Neuilly (required Bulgaria to cede numerous territories)
- Treaty of Trianon (signed by the Allies and Hungary)
- Treaty of Sevres (signed by the Allies and the Ottoman Empire)
The Americans wished for peace and democracy to be spread throughout the world. The British wanted to remove the threat of Germany and settle territorial disputes. The Chinese wanted the land that was taken from them to be returned. The French wanted to weaken Germany in every way possible, so as to ensure this would never happen again. Japan wanted to have racial equality throughout the world as well as have their captured land returned.
The Peace Treaties did much more than just end World War I. They reestablished boundaries of Europe and the Middle East. These new boundaries also created new countries in these parts of the world. Germany was forced to return all land they had taken from other countries during the war. Many countries became independent after this, and most countries sought to revise their government to prevent this from happening again. The League of Nations was also created which allowed alliances and regular meetings to be held between European countries.
